A Baptism of Fresh Fire
What is the answer to our deep hunger for more? We must seek a fresh fire. We must see that we have relegated the Holy Spirit to one baptism when there are many subsequent overflowings.

This is a solemn warning to everyone who speaks in tongues. We must repent and be re-baptized in the Holy Spirit so that we have legitimate authority to do the true work of God.

What is your greatest enemy in your quest for fresh fire? The arrogant presumption that your need is not urgent because you are already Spirit-filled. Why can’t we just admit we need fresh fire? We are powerless and need a new outpouring of the Spirit.

You cannot truly want to change the world around you unless you cut to the chase by seeing that the most effective and lasting results come from a baptism of fresh fire. When God empowered you to be a witness, it was the first of a series of encounters with the Holy Spirit. You must have repeated infusions of power at key points in your life.

Corporately, the church must learn that such returning to God for fresh fire is a reaction to crisis. In the early 1900s, the pioneers of the Holy Ghost movement recognized this need and called solemn assemblies based on the words of Joel:

Consecrate a fast, call a sacred assembly; gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land into the house of the Lord your God, and cry out to the Lord (Joel 1:14, NKJV).

Today, we have replaced the solemn assembly with the seminar. Some roving teacher blows into town for a one-day, instant-victory workshop. We assume that our need is for a new fact, not a new fire.

Don’t Get Sidelined
Look at Peter in Acts 3 and 4. He was in the Upper Room; he saw tongues of fire; he tasted the Day of Pentecost! Yet, barely two chapters later he is ordering the church back together for another infusion.

He is not doubting or diminishing his Pentecostal baptism! On the contrary, he is building upon the boldness acquired in Acts 2. He is asking for more of self to be buried in a new wave of Holy Ghost power to face the enemy.

You may be thinking, “God is already in me in full power.” This is not the issue. Fresh fire is about getting us deeper into God, pressing further into His power, being clothed in more of Him, confronting added challenges of spiritual warfare.

The first baptism put us in the Spirit; now a lifetime of reducing self-dependence has begun. Self-dependence is the great enemy of all that the Lord does.

Self is not only conquered by daily choices of surrender, by prayer, by reckoning the work of the cross to ourselves, but also by seasons of seeking and receiving new downpours of the Holy Spirit.

What you crave is a full measure of fire, a deeper baptism. You do not want to be sidelined during the next wave of God in America.

Above all, you are convinced that God has more for you than what you imagined. So now doubts are gone, excuses are buried, and you will accept nothing less than fresh fire.

A Model Prayer
Now back to Acts 4. After the healing of the lame man at the temple gate, the Jewish religious leaders commanded Peter and John not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus (v. 18). Peter saw what we couldn’t see: only an additional empowerment would help the church answer this threat. His prayer is a model for how to ask for and receive fresh fire.

“Now, Lord, look on their threats, and grant to Your servants that with all boldness they may speak Your word, by stretching out Your hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done through the name of Your holy Servant Jesus.” And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness (Acts 4:29-31, NKJV).

Peter understood that the threat was from satan, ultimately against God. In other words, we are under a supernatural siege and only supernatural power can answer it.

The next part of Peter’s prayer revealed his motive for wanting power—he asked for boldness to preach the Word. There is not a hint of petition for personal safety, emotional blessing or lifestyle enhancement. His passion was for the Word of God to have its full impact on the lost and hurting.

God’s power cannot help but overtake the heart that has reduced itself to only wanting the Kingdom advanced!

You may have to pray alone, or you may be able to gather a core of right-hearted believers. Find the place; create the time; fall before God in the discipline of waiting. He is the God Who answers by fire. Soon you’ll be engulfed, and your fears will be ashes. The ensuing sense of purpose will astound you. Do not wait…because the stirring in your heart right now is a signal from Jesus. Fresh fire is about to fall on you!

I was just a guest on Daystar TV Network and God was so gracious! I gave a teaching on their worldwide live broadcast for 45 minutes straight, with no notes.
