Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

“I have set watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; They shall never hold their peace day or night. You who make mention of the Lord, do not keep silent, and give Him no rest till He establishes and till He makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.” Isaiah 62:6-7
Israel’s survival and continuous existence today and throughout history is clear evidence of God’s supernatural influence and miracle-working power in and over His “chosen people.” If there was ever a proof of the existence of the God of the Bible it is this: the utter fulfillment of every prophetic word in the Bible concerning Israel, her planting, her building, her destruction and diaspora among the nations and her re-gathering and rebuilding. Israel and the Jewish people are a sign and a wonder!
The Bible refers to the Israelites by several names. For instance God calls them, “My People” or as stated in Psalm 33:12, He refers to them as a “Chosen Nation.” Further, we see them referred to as “Hebrews” (Exodus 1:15) or “Jews” (Esther 8:16). The nation of Israel was birthed through God’s promise to Abraham, the first “Hebrew” and Jacob, the first “Israel” after he wrestled with God for his blessing near the ford of Jabbok (Gen. 32:22-32). It was out of this divine wrestling match that Jacob’s name was changed to Israel. We find that Israel still wrestles for her blessing today as surrounding nations claim her territory for themselves and vow to drive her and her Jewish inhabitants into the sea. Even now a house of worship inscribed with the words, “God has no son” dominates the place where His temple once stood as a testimony that the God of Israel lives. But Jeremiah has said, “Behold the days are coming, says the Lord, when the whole city [of Jerusalem] shall be built for the Lord…it shall not be plucked up or thrown down anymore” (Jeremiah 31:38-40).
The fate and destiny of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital is directly related to the advent of Messiah: the first time being his birth and the second being Jesus’ return at the end of the age. Therefore Christians everywhere have a divine assignment to “pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm 122:9). It is the only city in the world for which Scripture commands prayer to be made.
The prophet Amos foretold the raising of the tabernacle of David a second time, referring to Jesus, the son of David, and His establishment of a dwelling place for His glory once and for all. In conjunction with raising up David’s fallen tabernacle again, Amos said God would “bring back the captives of Israel and plant them in their land, and no more shall they be pulled up from the land that I have given them” (Amos 9:15). Therefore David said concerning Jerusalem, “For the sake of the house of the Lord I will seek your good” (Psalm 122:9). The last word of God concerning His inheritance is “I will plant them in this land with all My heart and soul” (Jeremiah 32:41). All the earth can be certain that He will do what He has promised!
True peace in the Middle East can only come in accordance with the declared will of God for Israel and Jerusalem. Make no mistake. He shall fulfill His Word concerning her.
If we wish to live in a place where God’s favor, blessings and signs, wonders and miracles dwell, we must also be in a place where we consistently pray for and stand with Israel. To be close to Israel is to be close to signs, miracles and wonders. This is not only for us as individuals, but it will determine the blessing and favor of God on nations as well. All the more as we see the Day of Christ’s return to Jerusalem approaching, let us pray for the peace of Jerusalem and that our nation will stand with the nation of Israel against all who seek her destruction.
